General Prepress Guide

General Guide Lines for preparing files for
Large Format Print or Billboard Print Production

  • I prefer Adobe Illustrator® for billboard designs, other programs can produce print files, but be careful to follow notes below.
  • Include a small jpg proof of the job to indicate the layout to be produced.
  • Include any special instructions, size or finishing details etc.
  • The file should be proportionate to the required output.
  • A scale of 1 foot = 1 inch (1/12th) is convenient but other scales are acceptable as well, as long as the scale is indicated.
  • Convert any fonts to outlines or paths, where possible.
  • Send all fonts used in the layout if outlining is not an option.
  • If the layout contains images, please link or place these as opposed to embedding them in the layout. This will help to preserve the image quality and makes any pre-print adjustments possible.
  • Include any / all images or other linked art the layout uses as separate files. Embedded files can not be adjusted to improve print output.
  • Files must be in CMYK mode, this includes all linked image files.
  • Do not adjust image colours in a layout program. Do any colour correction in Photoshop or similar application to the linked file.
  • Avoid e-mailing large files (greater than 5 - 6 MB).
  • Any blacks should be 4 colour black (50% cyan, 50% magenta, 50% yellow, 100% Black) Process Black is 0,0,0,100.
  • When using templates be sure to add new layers above the template original layer, templates layers are set to not print.
  • Please compress large files for easier network transfer.
